On June 28, 1969, the New York Police Department’s Public Morals Squad sent officers into the Stonewall Inn in Lower Manhattan with orders to arrest anyone seen committing the crime of being non-gender conforming. Nobody knows for sure who the woman was who broke out of her handcuffs, punched four cops, and pushed the surrounding crowd to riot–but Storme always said it was her, and most of the people who knew her believed it. Storme became famous for a lot of other things in her life, above all of them being an androgynous butch lesbian style icon who didn’t take shit from anybody
